FGCU's Hot Hitting Leads to Sweep of USF, 3-0

TAMPA, Fla. - Sophomore Brittany Muse (Arcadia, Fla./DeSoto County HS) and senior Chelsea Lyles (Colorado Springs, Col./Harrison HS/Western Nebraska CC) finished with 14 kills and 12 kills, respectively, while Camil Dominguez (Santo Domingo, D.R./Santa Teresita) and Holly Youngquist (Estero, Fla./Evangelical Christian) registered double doubles as the FGCU volleyball squad swept USF 3-0 (28-26, 25-16, 25-18) Thursday night.

FGCU (6-19 overall) outhit the Bulls (10-15 overall) .413-.260 and used a match-high 43 digs to frustrate the USF offense. Muse blasted 14 kills and recorded a career-high .635 hitting percentage. Lyles finished the match with a career-high and team-high .647 to go with her 12 kills. Youngquist recorded the second double double of her career with 15 digs and 10 kills. Dominguez registered her team-leading eighth double double of the season with 41 assists and 10 digs. Senior Emma Racila (Fort Myers, Fla./Bishop Verot/College of Charleston) chipped in with 10 kills

In the opening set, the Bulls jumped out to a 13-8 lead forcing the Eagles to call for a timeout. The Blue and Green then used an 8-2 run, highlighted by a pair of Muse kills, to grab a 16-15 lead. The teams would battle back-and-forth the rest of the match, having the score tied on nine different occasions. With the score all square at 26-26, the Eagles got back-to-back attack errors from the Bulls to pick up the 28-26 win in set one.

In the second set, USF shot out to a quick 10-4 lead, before the Blue and green used a 6-0 run to tie the game at 10-10. FGCU used a 15-6 run and dominated the Bulls the rest of the set to pick up a 25-16 win and a grab a commanding 2-0 lead in the match. The Eagles scored five unanswered points to close out the game, highlighted by kills from Muse and Lyles.

FGCU got off to a great start in game three, as they grabbed a 14-8 lead early thanks to a kill from Youngquist. The Bulls would try to claw their way back into the match but a kill from Muse and a service ace by senior Adrianne McNally (Howell, Mich./Pinckney HS) gave the Eagles a 21-15 advantage. FGCU would go on to win the set 25-18 to pick up a big non-conference win. The Blue and Green hit a blistering .517 in the set, while USF was limited to .259.

The Eagles will return home to wrap up the 2010 season when they welcome the Hatters of Stetson into ‘The Nest’ on Saturday, Nov. 13 for ‘Senior Day’.
