FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Florida Gulf Coast University volleyball team will open the home portion of the 2011 season this weekend by hosting the 2011 FGCU Homewood Suites Volleyball Invitational at Alico Arena.

Tournament Schedule:
Friday, September 2nd
11:30 a.m. – No. 3 USC (1-1) vs. UCF (2-1)
5:00 p.m. – Furman (2-1) vs. UCF (2-1)
7:30 p.m. – No. 3 USC (1-1) vs. FGCU (2-1)

Saturday, September 3rd
11:30 a.m. – Furman (2-1) vs. No. 3 USC (1-1)
1:30 p.m. – UCF (2-1) vs. FGCU (2-1)
7:00 p.m. – Furman (2-1) vs. FGCU (2-1)

The Eagles, who went 2-1 at the NCCU Tournament last weekend with wins over Campbell and NCCU, will host No. 3 USC at 7:30 p.m. on on Friday before finishing the weekend with matches against UCF (1:30 p.m.) and Furman (7 p.m.) on Saturday. FGCU is 57-14 all-time at home, including 32-11 since moving to Division I.

FGCU is 0-1 all-time against The Trojans, after falling to USC 3-0 (25-22, 25-19, 25-15) at the Galen Center in Los Angeles, Calif. in their first-ever meeting on Sept. 3, 2009. It will be the Green and Blue’s third meeting with UCF, with the all-time series tied at 1-1. The Eagles dropped the last matchup to the Knights at the 2010 Homewood Suites Volleyball Invite 3-0 (25-15, 25-23, 25-22) on Aug. 27. FGCU and FAU have met on three occasions with the Owls taking all three matchups in four sets.

Led by fourth-year head coach Dave Nichols, the Green and Blue are 2-1 on the season after wins over Campbell and North Carolina Central and a five-set loss to Elon. Freshman outside hitter Jill Hopper (Muncie, Ind./Yorktown HS) leads the Eagles with 39 kills (3.00 kps) for a .309 hitting percentage with 28 digs (2.15 dps) and 52.5 points (4.04 pps). The Eagles received a boost on Wednesday as senior All-Conference libero Holly Youngquist (Estero, Fla./Evangelical Christian HS) was cleared to play this weekend after missing FGCU’s first three games due to an ankle injury.

Tickets are also available at www.FGCUathletics.com/tickets. All Tournament passes, valid for all games during the tournament, will be $10 for adults and $5 for youth (ages 3-18). Admission for FGCU faculty, staff, and students is free. The FGCU ticket office is open from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. from Monday through Friday.

No. 3 USC Notes
The Trojans are 1-1 on the year after defeating No. 12 Minnesota (3-2) and falling to then-No. 1 Penn State (3-2). Two-time All-American outside hitter Alex Jupiter leads USC with 44 kills, while adding 22 digs and three blocks. Setter Kendall Bateman has registered 101 assists and 21 digs in leading the Trojans offense.

Furman Notes
Furman is 2-1 on the season after defeating Wisconsin and Charleston Southern and losing to Duke at the Duke Invitational last weekend. Junior outside hitter Chandler Ambrester leads the Paladins with 47 kills, 43 digs and 49.5 points.

UCF Notes
UCF comes into the weekend with a 2-1 record after defeating North Florida and South Alabama while dropping a 3-0 match to Michigan State. Sophomore outside hitter Angelica Crump leads the Knights with 45 kills and 46.5 points.
