Volleyball Hosts Stetson at 'The Nest' on Saturday

FORT MYERS, Fla. – After winning a pair of matches in its first week of Atlantic Sun action, the FGCU volleyball squad will welcome conference foe Stetson to ‘The Nest’ at Alico Arena on Saturday night at 7 p.m.
The Eagles enter the matchup with a 7-7 overall record (2-0 A-Sun), while the Hatters are 3-9 overall on the season with a 0-2 A-Sun record.
The Salvation Army and the Harry Chapin Food Bank will be taking donations before and during the game, starting at 6pm. They will accept any clothing and non-perishable foods and will be located under the north and south stairwells. In addition, all employees of the Salvation Army and Harry Chapin Food Bank will receive free admission with a valid company identification. FGCU has five players between 65 and 160 kills so far this season, led by freshman Jill Hopper’s (Muncie, Ind./Yorktown HS) team-leading 159. Hopper, who has been named to three All-Tournament teams this season, has also tallied 22 service aces, 75 digs and 23 total blocks. Sophomore Kaitlin Holm (Fort Myers, Fla./Fort Myers HS/Marshall) and freshman Olivia Mesner (Boca Raton, Fla./Spanish River HS) are second and third on the squad in kills with 139 and 116 kills, respectively. Senior Holly Youngquist (Estero, Fla./Evangelical Christian HS) leads the team with 187 digs (4.25/set). Freshman Gigi Meyer (Gainesville, Fla./Buchholz HS) has run the FGCU offense, with 403 total assists for an average of 8.40 assists per set.

SCOUTING THE HATTERS
Stetson, who will open A-Sun play with the Eagles, is looking to continue their winning ways after sweeping Bethune-Cookman 3-0 (25-22, 25-23, 29-27) on Sept. 27.
The Hatters, who have lost six of their last seven matches coming into Saturday's contest, are led by Kaley Melville’s 143 kills (3.40 per set). Melville has also racked up 106 digs (2.52 per set) and 10 blocks on the season. Ellen Hawks leads the team in blocking with 37 total. Setter Kelli Carneal runs the Stetson offense racking up 316 assists (7.35 per set) and on the defensive side, Monique Russell has tallied 172 digs.
FGCU holds a 6-0 lead in the all-time series over the Hatters. In the last matchup between the two squads (Nov. 13, 2010) in Fort Myers, Fla., Emma Racila and Chelsea Lyles led the Green and Blue with 14 kills and 13 kills, respectively, as the Eagles swept Stetson, 3-0 (25-21, 25-14, 25-19).
