Volleyball Looks to Top Stetson on the Road this Weekend

FORT MYERS, Fla. – After going splitting a pair of matches last week, including picking up a hard-fought 3-2 win at Belmont, the FGCU volleyball squad will face Stetson this weekend in DeLand, Fla.
The Eagles (13-9, 7-2 A-Sun), who clinched a berth in the Atlantic Sun Tournament last week, face the Hatters (7-15, 1-8 A-Sun) on Saturday, Oct. 29 at 3 p.m.
FGCU has four players with 100+ kills so far this season, led by freshman Jill Hopper’s (Muncie, Ind./Yorktown HS) team-leading 273. Hopper, who has been named to three All-Tournament teams this season, ranks sixth in the conference and first among freshmen in kills. Sophomore Kaitlin Holm (Fort Myers, Fla./Fort Myers HS/Marshall) and redshirt-senior Jelena Simic (Lazarevac, Serbia/Kolubara Technical/Seward County CC) are second and third on the squad in kills with 195 and 169 kills, respectively. Freshman setter Gigi Meyer (Gainesville, Fla./Buchholz HS) has run the FGCU offense, with 716 total assists for an average of 8.95 assists per set.

SCOUTING THE HATTERS
The Hatters, who have lost five of their last eight matches, come into Saturday’s contest after defeating Savannah State 3-0 on Oct. 25.
Stetson is led by Kaley Melville and Kaylee Ream, who have registered 241 and 200 kills, respectively. Kelli Carneal runs the Hatter offense and has recorded 402 assists on the year.
The Eagles defeated the Hatters 3-1 (22-25, 27-25, 25-16, 25-22) in the last meeting between the teams on Oct. 1, 2011. Melville recorded 15 kills and Carneal added 32 assists and six digs in the loss.
