FORT MYERS, Fla. – Sophomore Kaitlin Holm (Fort Myers, Fla./Fort Myers HS/Marshall) registered a match-high 17 kills as the FGCU Volleyball squad dropped a tough Atlantic Sun Conference match with a 3-2 (25-21, 27-25, 14-25, 22-25, 12-15) loss to the Hatters of Stetson on Saturday afternoon.
The Green and Blue fall to 13-10 overall (7-3 A-Sun), while Stetson improves to 8-15 overall and 2-8 in A-Sun play.
Holm added four blocks and a pair of digs to go with her match-high 17 kills. Sophomore Jessica Barnes (Winter Haven, Fla./Haines City HS) finished with 12 kills and five digs. Freshman Jill Hopper (Muncie, Ind./Yorktown HS) chipped in with 10 digs and nine kills. Senior Jelena Simic (Lazarevac, Serbia/Kolubara Technical/Seward County CC) played the libero position and registered 23 digs, while Holly Youngquist (Estero, Fla./Evangelical Christian HS) moved to outside hitter and tallied six kills and 13 digs. Freshman setter Gigi Meyer (Gainesville, Fla./Buchholz HS) picked up her sixth double-double of the season with 41 assists and 16 digs.
Kaylee Ream (17), Kaley Melville (15) and Ellen Hawks (13) each finished with double-digit kills to lead Stetson. Kelli Carneal added 45 assists and five digs for the Hatters.
In the first set, Stetson jumped out to a 13-10 lead forcing the Eagles to call for an early timeout. Coming out of the break the Green and Blue responded with a 7-1 spurt, highlighted by a pair of Holm kills, to grab a 17-14 lead. The Hatters would score three unanswered to even the set at 17-17. FGCU went on to outscore Stetson 8-4 to close out the set and pick up the 25-21 win.
After the Hatters scored the first point of the second set off a kill by Hawks, the Eagles used a 6-0 run to grab a 6-1 advantage. Trailing 22-16, SU used a 9-2 run to pick up set point at 25-24. The young FGCU squad didn’t fold, and got kills from Brooke Kohler (Jupiter, Fla./Jupiter HS/Clemson) and Hopper, as well as a Stetson attack error to pick up the 27-25 win.
The Hatters used the 2-0 deficit in the match to fuel themselves to wins in games three (25-14), four (25-22) and five (15-12) and win the match 3-2.
The Eagles return to the court on Tuesday, Nov. 1, when they head to Boca Raton, Fla. to take on FAU in non-conference action. The match is schedule to begin at 6:30 p.m.
