FORT MYERS, Fla. – After dropping a five-set match at Stetson last weekend, the FGCU volleyball squad will take on in-state rival FAU on Tuesday night at 6:30 p.m in Boca Raton, Fla.
The Eagles enter the matchup with a 13-10 overall record (7-3 A-Sun), while the Owls are 3-21 overall on the season with a 0-12 Sun Belt record.
FGCU has four players with 100+ kills so far this season, led by freshman Jill Hopper’s (Muncie, Ind./Yorktown HS) team-leading 282. Hopper, who has been named to three All-Tournament teams this season, ranks sixth in the conference and first among freshmen in kills. Sophomore Kaitlin Holm (Fort Myers, Fla./Fort Myers HS/Marshall) and redshirt-senior Jelena Simic (Lazarevac, Serbia/Kolubara Technical/Seward County CC) are second and third on the squad in kills with 212 and 169 kills, respectively. Freshman setter Gigi Meyer (Gainesville, Fla./Buchholz HS) has run the FGCU offense, with 757 total assists for an average of 8.91 assists per set.
SCOUTING THE OWLS
FAU is coming off a heartbreaking 3-2 (26-24, 25-18, 19-25, 13-25, 11-15) loss against Troy.
The Owls, who are 0-8 in home matches this season, have dropped 12 consecutive matches. FAU is led by Georgia Robinson’s 188 kills. Robinson has also recorded 39 blocks and 26 digs. Cintia Nightingale anchors the Owls defense with 255 digs.
