NASHVILLE, Tenn. – For the third time this season and second time in less than a week, the FGCU volleyball team will take on UNF on Thursday, Nov. 17 at 6 p.m. in the opening round of the 2011 Atlantic Sun Championship at Lipscomb's Allen Arena.
The Green and Blue hold an 11-2 advantage in the all-time series against the Ospreys, including a sweep of the team's two regular season contests this season. In the first meeting on Sept. 24, the freshmen duo of Jill Hopper (Muncie, Ind./Yorktown HS) and Olivia Mesner (Boca Raton, Fla./Spanish River HS) finished with 10 kills each as the Eagles swept UNF 3-0 (25-21, 25-22, 25-23). In the rematch, last Friday night in Jacksonville (Nov. 11), FGCU rallied from a 2-1 deficit to pick up a hard-fought 3-2 (23-25, 25-17, 20-25, 25-22, 15-12) victory.
The No. 3 Eagles (17-12 overall, 10-3 A-Sun), making their second appearance in the last three years at the conference tournament, head into the tournament having won four of their last six matches.
The Ospreys (14-16, 5-8 A-Sun) are making their second consecutive appearance in the conference postseason after securing the No. 6 seed with their 3-1 victory over Stetson last Saturday. UNF closed the regular season winning six of their last eight while also establishing a new single season high for wins under head coach Kevin Campbell.
Earlier this week, Hopper was named A-Sun Freshman of the Year and earned All-Conference (second team) and All-Freshman team honors, while senior libero Holly Youngquist (Estero, Fla./Evangelical Christian HS) and freshman setter Gigi Meyer (Gainesville, Fla./Buchholz HS) earned All-Conference second team and All-Freshmen team accolades, respectively.
FGCU has six players with 100+ kills so far this season, led by Hopper’s team-leading 358. Hopper, who has been named to three All-Tournament teams this season, leads the team in points (434.0), kills (358) and service aces (46). The Muncie, Ind. native has recorded seven double-doubles this season and ranks fifth in the conference in kills. Sophomore Kaitlin Holm (Fort Myers, Fla./Fort Myers HS/Marshall) and redshirt-senior Jelena Simic (Lazarevac, Serbia/Kolubara Technical/Seward County CC) are second and third on the squad in kills with 263 and 239 kills, respectively. Meyer has shown a lot of poise in running the FGCU offense, racking up 989 total assists for an average of 9.07 assists per set.
The winner of the UNF-FGCU match advances to Friday's semifinal match against tournament host No. 2 Lipscomb at 6 p.m. The championship match is scheduled for Saturday at 4 p.m.
