FORT MYERS, Fla. – Winners of 12 consecutive matches, including 11 straight conference contests, the first place FGCU volleyball team will head to Jacksonville to take on UNF in Atlantic Sun Conference mid-week action.
FGCU (16-7, 11-0 A-Sun) is off to the program’s best start in conference play since joining the league in 2007. The Eagles’ overall 12-game win streak is their longest since the 2008-09 season, when they reeled off 12 straight wins from October 3 to November 7, 2008.
The Ospreys (14-10, 5-6 A-Sun), wrapping up a four-match homestand on Tuesday night, swept Bethune-Cookman last Tuesday and then picked up huge conference wins against Lipscomb and Northern Kentucky over the weekend. In each of those three matches, UNF had three players register double-digit kills. Additionally, four Ospreys had double-digit digs in the four-set wins over Lipscomb and Northern Kentucky.
The Green and Blue, who have swept seven of their last 11 A-Sun opponents, showcase five players that have registered at least 145 kills far this season, led by sophomore Jill Hopper’s (Muncie, Ind./Yorktown HS) team-leading 211. Sophomore Whitney Masters (Muncie, Ind./Wapahani HS) leads the team with 282 digs (3.48/set). The setting duo of sophomore Gigi Meyer (Gainesville, Fla./Buchholz HS) and junior Courtney Greenberg (Fort Myers, Fla./Fort Myers HS/Juniata College) has run the FGCU offense, averaging 5.85 assists and 4.51 assists per set, respectively.
