FORT MYERS, Fla. – Riding a 13-match winning streak, the first place FGCU volleyball team will host the Hatters of Stetson in Atlantic Sun Conference action Saturday afternoon. First serve is set for 4 p.m.
All fans are encouraged to wear PINK and help the Eagles support the fight against breast cancer. FGCU Athletics will be selling pink themed t-shirts ($10) for fans to purchase at the event, with all proceeds going to the Side-Out Foundation. The t-shirts, generously sponsored by Surety Construction of Bonita Springs, will read “Eagles Wear Pink” on the back.
FGCU (17-7, 12-0 A-Sun), the first team to punch its ticket to the 2012 A-Sun Conference Tournament, is off to the program’s best start in conference play since the 2008 season, when they went 11-1 through 12 A-Sun matches and finished the season 18-2 (.900).
The Green and Blue, who lead the A-Sun in hitting percentage (.275), opponent hitting percentage (.180), assists (13.65/set) and kills (14,72/set), showcase five players that have registered at least 150 kills far this season, led by sophomore Jill Hopper’s (Muncie, Ind./Yorktown HS) team-leading 231. Sophomore Olivia Mesner (Boca Raton, Fla./Spanish River HS) leads the team and the A-Sun in hitting percentage (.455). Sophomore Whitney Masters (Muncie, Ind./Wapahani HS) leads the squad with 308 digs (3.62/set), while the setting duo of sophomore Gigi Meyer (Gainesville, Fla./Buchholz HS) and junior Courtney Greenberg (Fort Myers, Fla./Fort Myers HS/Juniata College) has run the FGCU offense, averaging 5.80 assists and 4.57 assists per set, respectively.
Losers of 17 of their last 18 matches, Stetson (4-25, 0-12 A-Sun) has a pair of players that rank among the A-Sun leaders. Junior Ellen Hawks ranks second in the A-Sun in total blocks (92) and fourth in blocks/set (0.91), while senior Monique Russell ranks sixth in the league in digs per set (4.22).
The Eagles hold an 8-1 lead in the all-time series over the Hatters. In the last meeting between the two squads at Alico Arena (Oct. 1, 2011), Hopper recorded career-highs in kills (24) and digs (17) as FGCU defeated Stetson 3-1 (22-25, 27-25, 25-16, 25-22)
