Volleyball Team Soars over Saint Leo

The Florida Gulf Coast University volleyball team soared over the Saint Leo Lions 30-16, 30-14, 30-8, Friday night in front of a crowd of 506 at Alico Arena in Fort Myers. The Eagles stormed out to an 18-9 lead in game one and coasted to the 30-16 victory. The Lions were unable to answer a strong FGCU attack, as the Eagles hit .522 in game two and .400 in game three. For the match, the Eagles hit an impressive .373, while holding the Lions to a (-.031) hitting percentage. Senior Kristy Hartley (Naples) hit an amazing .556 with 10 kills, while adding eight blocks. It was her fifth straight match in double figures for kills. Freshman Heather Van Olst (Loxahatchee) added 11 kills and 12 digs, while freshman Whitney Hendry (Fort Myers) recorded 11 digs. Freshman Eniko Lukacs led the way for the Lions with seven kills and seven digs. Junior Eva Thompson added 11 digs while senior setter Robbie Beach dished out 19 assists. Florida Gulf Coast University improves to 9-1 with the win and will be in action again Saturday afternoon when they host the Florida Tech Panthers at 4 p.m. in Alico Arena.
