FORT MYERS, FL – Florida Gulf Coast University extended its shutout streak to six straight with a pair of 3-0 victories in an abbreviated Sailfish Classic Friday at Palm Beach Atlantic.
The Eagles rolled past Embry-Riddle (30-23, 30-10, 30-22) and Jamestown College of North Dakota (30-15, 30-26, 30-28) to improve to 12-1. FGCU has won 36 of 42 games this season and have now registered nine three-game sweeps on the year.
Junior Devon Watts (Somerville, TX) and freshman Tamra Grigsby (West Palm Beach/Royal Palm HS) led the Eagles with 12 kills and 11 kills respectively against Embry-Riddle. Sophomore Laura Manovill (Dunedin/Dunedin HS) passed out 30 assists while freshman libero Whitney Hendry (Fort Myers/Bishop Verot) led the defense with 13 digs. In the final match, senior hitter Kristy Hartley (Naples/St. John Neumann), the lone FGCU all-tournament selection, posted 13 kills in the victory. Manovill had 40 assists in the match and Hendry added 21 digs.
The Eagles will look to continue their winning ways at Alico Arena on Tuesday, September 28 at 7 p.m. when they host the Eckerd Tritons.
