FGCU Volleyball Hits Road For Four Matches

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Florida Gulf Coast University volleyball team begins an eight-match road swing this weekend when it plays four matches at the Amerihost/Grand Valley State Fall Classic in Allendale, Mich. The Eagles, who enter the tournament with a 3-0 record, continue their demanding early season schedule with a 10 a.m. match against Arkansas Tech (3-2). The Golden Suns return four starters and six letterwinners from last year's 13-17 squad. On Friday night FGCU will face preseason 14th-ranked and host Grand Valley State (3-1). The preseason favorite in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference North, GVSU finished the 2004 season with a 27-7 overall record and was ranked #15 in the final poll. On Saturday, FGCU will begin the day with a 2 p.m. match against Lake Superior State and then conclude the tournament against a strong Wheeling Jesuit team at 6 p.m. It will be the first-ever meeting for FGCU against all four tournament opponents. Junior middle blocker Ericka Fonseca (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) has paced the Eagles early in the season with 35 kills and is hitting .554. Senior outside hitter Devon Watts (Somerville, Texas) has 22 kills and sophomore outside hitter Brooke Youngquist (Fort Myers, Fla.) has posted 20 kills, 16 digs and five service aces. Sophomore libero Whitney Hendry (Fort Myers, Fla) leads the defensive effort with 35 digs. Following this weekend's tournament at Grand Valley State, the Eagles continue their road swing at the Armstrong Atlantic State Classic on September 9-10 in Savannah, Georgia.
