FGCU Volleyball to Host Palm Beach Atlantic on September 14
FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Florida Gulf Coast University volleyball team begins a two-game home stand when it hosts Palm Beach Atlantic on September 14 at Alico Arena.
The Eagles (9-2) posted three wins in four matches at last weekend’s Armstrong Atlantic State Pirate Volleyball Classic in Savannah, Ga. FGCU knocked off Francis Marion, Presbyterian, and Puerto Rico Rio-Piedras before dropping their final match to Wingate. The final three matches were all five-game matches.
Palm Beach Atlantic (6-2) has won two straight heading into tonight’s match at Lynn University. The Sailfish are led by senior middle blockers Kristin Mock and Meghan Cok.
The Eagles have been paced by sophomore outside hitter Brooke Youngquist (Fort Myers, Fla.), who has posted seven doubles-doubles so far this season, and senior Devon Watts (Somerville, Texas), who has six. Junior middle blocker Ericka Fonseca (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) leads the team with 3.98 kills per game. Watts has recorded 3.38 kills per game while Youngquist averages 3.30. Sophomore Whitney Hendry (Fort Myers, Fla.) has topped 30 digs or more in four matches, including a school-record 48 digs against Wingate. Junior setter Laura Manovill (Dunedin, Fla.) dished out a school-record 64 assists against Puerto Rico at Rio Piedras.
Fans are encouraged to make a donation to the American Red Cross to support victims of Hurricane Katrina in lieu of purchasing tickets for Wednesday night’s match with Palm Beach Atlantic and Friday night’s match with Lynn University. Donations at both games will be collected at the main entrances to Alico Arena beginning at 6 p.m.
