FORT MYERS, Fla. – Sophomore outside hitter Brooke Youngquist and senior outside hitter Devon Watts recorded 17 kills each as Florida Gulf Coast University defeated Palm Beach Atlantic in three games (30-26, 30-26, and 32-30) on Wednesday evening.
Younquist (Fort Myers, Fla.) added 12 digs for her eight double-double while Watts (Somerville, Texas) had 10 digs to record her seventh double-double while attacking at a .353 clip for the match. Freshman setter Ciara Sandoval (Fort Myers, Fla.) directed the offense with 25 assists.
Palm Beach Atlantic was led by senior middle blocker Kristin Mock’s 13 kills and junior libero Whitney Warren’s 14 digs. Junior setter Ashley Bonvento handed out 34 assists for the Sailfish.
FGCU rallied from early deficits in all three games to post their seventh shut out of the season. The Eagles broke a 21-21 tie in game one with an 8-2 run to pull away. Youngquist and Watts combined for three kills to snap a 25-25 tie in game two. The decisive third game featured 11 ties as Watts had two kills to rally the Eagles from a 29-28 deficit. The Eagles took advantage of 20 hitting and six service errors while hitting just .201 for the match.
Palm Beach Atlantic (7-3) travels to #15 Florida Southern College on Friday while FGCU (10-2) hosts Lynn University on Friday at 7 p.m.
