FGCU Volleyball Hosts Lynn University on Friday
FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Florida Gulf Coast University volleyball team looks to continue its dominance at Alico Arena when it hosts Lynn University at 7 p.m. on Friday night.
FGCU (10-2) swept Palm Beach Atlantic (30-36, 30-26, 32-30) on Wednesday night to improve the Eagles all-time mark in Alico Arena to 10-1. Last year FGCU beat Lynn twice, including a 3-0 win over the Fighting Knights at Alico Arena in October. Eight of the Eagles’ 10 wins at home have been 3-0 shutouts.
The Eagles have been paced by sophomore outside hitter Brooke Youngquist (Fort Myers, Fla.), who has posted eight doubles-doubles so far this season, and senior Devon Watts (Somerville, Texas), who has seven. Watts is second on the team in kills at 3.53 per game and fourth in digs at 2.93 per game. Youngquist is third in kills with 3.47 per game, second in digs with 4.07 per game and leads the team with 26 services aces.
Junior middle blocker Ericka Fonseca (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) leads the team with 3.84 kills per game. Sophomore Whitney Hendry (Fort Myers, Fla.) has topped 30 digs or more in four matches, including a school-record 48 digs against Wingate, and at 7.2 digs per game leads all NCAA Division II players. Junior setter Laura Manovill (Dunedin, Fla.) averages 12.0 assists per game while freshman setter Ciara Sandoval (Fort Myers, Fla.) hands out 11.96 per game.
The Fighting Knights (4-2) are coming off a 3-0 loss to Palm Beach Atlantic on Tuesday. A pair of impressive freshmen has played key roles for Lynn. Outside hitter Erin Lyngse has started all six matches and leads the team with 3.4 kills per game. Freshman libero Christie Schade averages 5.0 digs per game to lead the defensive effort. Senior setter Jessica Woodby hands out over 13 assists per game.
For the second straight match, fans are encouraged to make a donation to the American Red Cross to support victims of Hurricane Katrina in lieu of purchasing tickets. FGCU student-athletes will be collecting donations at the main entrances to Alico Arena beginning at 6 p.m.
