FORT MYERS, Fla. – Sophomore outside hitter Brooke Youngquist posted her eight consecutive double-double to lead Florida Gulf Coast University (11-2) past Lynn University (4-3) in four games (30-27, 30-20, 29-31, 30-21) in NCAA South Region volleyball action Friday evening.
Youngquist (Fort Myers, Fla.) had 11 kills and 18 digs to lead the Eagles, who have won seven of their last eight matches. Youngquist has posted nine double-doubles in the first 13 matches this season. Senior Devon Watts (Somerville, Texas) had a team-high 18 kills while junior middle blocker Erica Fonseca (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) added 14 kills. Senior libero Ingrid Felicio (Fortaleza, Brazil) had a match-high 21 digs. Junior setter Laura Manovill (Dunedin, Fla.) handed out 53 assists.
Junior Larissa Witherspoon had a match-high 23 kills to lead the Fighting Knights, while freshman Erin Lyngse knocked down 15 kills. Senior Theresa Daniels added 13 kills and 14 digs.
Fonseca’s five kills propelled the Eagles to the win in game one. In the second game a service run of seven points by sophomore hitter Heather Van Olst (Loxahatchee, Fla.) and a service run of five by Youngquist propelled FGCU to a quick 2-0 lead. The Knights overcame a 28-26 deficit with a 4-1 run to pick up game three. But Van Olst led a service run of 7-0 early in game four to give the Eagles their 11th win in the first 12 home matches in school history.
FGCU only led in kills 62-60 but held Lynn to a .139 hitting percentage overall while holding an 11-6 advantage in blocks.
Lynn hosts Saint Leo in their Sunshine State Conference opener tomorrow at 4 p.m. FGCU travels to Florida Tech on Tuesday for a 7 p.m. match.
