FGCU Volleyball Travels to Florida Tech
FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Florida Gulf Coast University volleyball team looks to continue its early season success against NCAA Division II south region competition when it travels to Florida Tech on Tuesday.
It will be the only match this week for FGCU (11-2), which is coming off a 3-1 win over Lynn University 3-1 (30-27, 30-20, 29-31, 30-21) on Friday. FGCU and Florida Tech met twice during the 2004 season with the Eagles sweeping the Panthers at home in September and in Melbourne in October.
Sophomore outside hitter Brooke Youngquist (Fort Myers, Fla.) has posted eight straight double-doubles in kills and digs to lead FGCU. Youngquist is third on the team at 3.40 kills per game and 4.11 digs per game and has nine double-doubles overall. Junior middle blocker Ericka Fonseca (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) leads the team with 3.82 kills per game. Senior outside hitter Devon Watts (Somerville, TX) is second on the team in kills with 3.61 per game and has registered seven double-doubles.
Sophomore Whitney Hendry (Fort Myers, Fla.) leads the defensive effort at 6.79 digs per game. Junior setter Laura Manovill (Dunedin, Fla.) hands out 12.19 assists per match, while freshman Ciara Sandoval (Fort Myers, Fla.) averages 11.96 assists per match.
Florida Tech (4-9) has struggled lately. The Panthers lost their seventh straight with a 3-0 loss to #16 Barry last Saturday. Like FGCU, they have competed in both the Eckerd College and Presbyterian College tournaments though the two teams have not met.
The match will begin at 7 p.m.
