FGCU Volleyball Looks to Match Versus #20 Barry
FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Florida Gulf Coast University volleyball team looks to continue its early season success against NCAA Division II south region competition when it travels to #20 Barry University on Tuesday.
It will be the only match this week for FGCU (12-2), which is coming off a 3-0 win over Florida Tech University (30-219, 30-18, 30-17) on Tuesday. FGCU and Barry met twice during the 2004 season with the Buccaneers swept the Eagles 3-0 in Miami Shores, FL and 3-1 at Alico Arena. Barry was the preseason no.1 ranked team after winning the 2004 national championship.
Sophomore outside hitter Brooke Youngquist (Fort Myers, Fla.) has posted nine straight double-doubles in kills and digs to lead FGCU. Youngquist is third on the team at 3.46 kills per game and 4.08 digs per game and has ten double-doubles overall. Junior middle blocker Ericka Fonseca (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) leads the team with 3.88 kills per game. Senior outside hitter Devon Watts (Somerville, TX) is second on the team in kills with 3.54 per game and has registered seven double-doubles.
Sophomore Whitney Hendry (Fort Myers, Fla.) leads the defensive effort at 6.79 digs per game. Junior setter Laura Manovill (Dunedin, Fla.) hands out 11.62 assists per match, while freshman Ciara Sandoval (Fort Myers, Fla.) averages 11.48 assists per match.
Barry (8-6) has struggled lately. The Buccaneers took on 7th ranked Tampa University early last week and lost 0-3, the rebounded back with a win on Saturday versus St. Leo 3-0. This is the first of two meetings between the Eagles and the Buccaneers. Barry travels to Fort Myers on Friday, October 21.
