FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Florida Gulf Coast University volleyball team looks to continue a successful week when it hosts Florida Tech on Saturday, October 1 at Alico Arena.
FGCU, which knocked off No. 20 Barry on Tuesday, looks for its fourth straight win over Florida Tech. The Eagles defeated the Panthers in Melbourne, Fla. earlier this year in a three-game match (30-19, 30-18, 30-17).
FGCU and Florida Tech met twice during the 2004 season with the Eagles sweeping the Panthers 3-0 in both matches.
Florida Tech must face No. 7 Tampa on ?Friday night before they travel to Fort Myers. The Panthers (4-12) will try to stop their current 10-game losing streak.
Sophomore outside hitter Brooke Youngquist (Fort Myers, Fla.) has posted 10 straight double-doubles in kills and digs to lead FGCU. Youngquist was third on the team in kills versus Barry with 12, collecting 16 digs and two service aces. She is first on the team in service aces with 28 and third on the team in kills collected with 185 out of 54 games played.
Junior middle blocker Ericka Fonseca (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) leads the team with 3.91 kills per game. Fonseca is also leading the team in blocks with 69 for the season. Senior outside hitter Devon Watts (Somerville, TX) is second on the team in kills with 3.54 per game and has registered seven double-doubles.
Sophomore Whitney Hendry (Fort Myers, Fla.)leads the defensive effort at 6.56 digs per game and currently stands second on the NCAA national chart. Junior setter Laura Manovill (Dunedin, Fla.) hands out 11.18 assists per match, while freshman Ciara Sandoval (Fort Myers, Fla.) averages 10.97 assists per match.
The Eagles stand 21st in the nation in winning percentage according to the NCAA National Ranking Summary and they are 29th or above in four stats as a team. FGCU is currently 3rd in the nation in digs as a team with 21.85 per game. They are 15th in the nation in kills per game with 15.94 and 10th in the nation in blocks per game with 2.9. The Eagles slide into the ranks at 29th in the nation in assists per game with 13.9.
