Eagles Volleyball Dominate Sailfish 3-0

FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Florida Gulf Coast University women’s volleyball team dominated Palm Beach Atlantic for the second time this season. The Eagles (15-2) defeated the Sailfish in three games (30-24, 30-15, 30-20) for their second shuout of PBA this fall. Junior Erika Fonseca (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) collected 13 kills and posted a .545 hitting percentage to lead the Eagles. Fonseca also served two aces and had five total blocks. Senior Devon Watts (Somerville, TX ) and junior Melissa Duffield (Cedar Rapids, IA) collected nine kills each. Watts hit a .227 with seven total blocks and two digs. Duffield posted a .467 hitting percentage respectively and led the team in blocks with 10 total including a season high seven solo blocks. “Tonight we had fun, we communicated and played as a team,” said Watts. “I feel we are just getting better each time we come out on the floor.” Freshman setter Ciara Sandoval (Fort Myers, FL) and junior setter Laura Manovill (Dunedin, FL) led a 6-2 offense with 21 assists and 15 assists, respectively. Sandoval also recorded nine digs. Sophomore libero Whitney Hendry (Fort Myers, FL) led the defense with 19 digs while also recording a service ace. The Eagles shot .266 overall as a team and collected three service aces. They had 43 kills to Palm Beach’s 38 and had a total of 28 blocks as a team. The Eagles host Flager College this Friday October 7 at Alico Arena at 7:00 pm.
