Eagles Undefeated in Presbyterian Tournament
Clinton S.C. – The Florida Gulf Coast University volleyball team extended their winning streak to 11 games after defeating Catawaba College and Presbyterian College Saturday afternoon in the 2nd Annual Blue Hose Tournament hosted by Presbyterian College.
The Eagles defeated Catawaba (9-11) in three games, 30-20, 30-17 and 30-23. The Eagles then beat the Blue Hose (22-4), whom they defeated earlier this year in five games, in a shutout 30-18, 30-27 and 30-16.
Senior Devon Watts (Somerville, TX) and sophomores Heather Van Olst (Loxahatchee, FL) and Brooke Youngquist (Fort Myers, FL) led the Eagles with nine kills each.
Youngquist was also second on the team in digs with 16 while Watts posted five blocks and five digs. Junior Melissa Duffield (Cedar Rapids, IA) led the Eagles with seven blocks to go with five kills.
Leading the offense were freshman setter Ciara Sandoval (Fort Myers, FL) and junior setter Laura Manovill (Dunedin, FL). Sandoval collected 17 assists and Manovill collected 15 while working together in a 6-2 offense. Sandoval also posted a season high 16 digs along with two service aces.
Leading digger was sophomore libero Whitney Hendry (Fort Myers, FL) with 17. Hendry is currently third in the most recent NCAA statistical rankings in digs per game with 6.66.
The Eagles (20-2), currently ranked second in the NCAA Division II South Region, will travel to South Region opponent Lander College on Sunday, October 16 at 2 p.m.
