Eagles Claim Record 12th Straight Win
Greenwood, S.C. - The Florida Gulf Coast University volleyball team captured their 12th straight win with a three-game sweep at Lander College Sunday afternoon. The Eagles (21-2) beat the Bobcats (7-15) 30-27, 30-17 and 30-15 in the South Region match-up.
Two sophomores led FGCU to victory at the net. Outside hitter Heather Van Olst (Loxahatchee, FL) collected 12 kills with a .286 hitting percentage and outside hitter Brooke Youngquist (Ft. Myers, FL) posted 11 kills with a .143 hitting percentage. Youngquist collected her 13th double-double of the season, bringing up 18 digs to lead the team.
Leading the Eagles at the net were both freshman Ciara Sandoval (Fort Myers, FL) and junior Laura Manovill (Dunedin, FL) who are running a 6-2 offense as setters. Sandoval collected eight assists versus the Bearcats and five digs. Manovill posted 19 assists with five digs.
FGCU won all four games on the weekend swing to break the school record for consecutive wins. Last year's team won nine straight.
FGCU, ranked second in the South Region, trails only the University of Tampa in the most current regional ranking. Eight teams receive bids to the NCAA South Region tournament. FGCU picked up three regional wins over the weekend, including their second win this fall over Presbyterian, the No. 10 team in the region. FGCU is now 10-1 against regional competition.
The Eagles return to Alico Arena to host Eckerd College, the No. 7 team in the region, on Tuesday, October 18 at 7 p.m.
