Jacksonville, FL – The Florida Gulf Coast University volleyball (25-3) team took on Division I University of North Florida (18-9) in Jacksonville Friday. The Eagles lost to the Osprey in three games 30-22, 30-28 and 30-23.
This is the second year in a row that the Eagles fell to UNF. FGCU lost 3-1 in the semi-finals of regionals to the Osprey in the Division II South Region semifinals in 2004.
The Eagles were led by junior middle blocker Erika Fonseca (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) at the net with 16 kills and a .387 hitting percentage. Fonseca has been leading the team all season and now has collected a total of 367 kills for the Eagles squad. Second in kills was sophomore Brooke Youngquist (Fort Myers, FL) who had six kills and also collected 17 digs.
On defense sophomore Whitney Hendry (Fort Myers, FL) matched Youngquist with 17 digs of her own. Hendry has been solid in the back row all season for the Eagles. She had collected 560 dig so far the this season with a 6.22 average per game.
The Eagles offense was yet again led as a 6-2 with setter Laura Manovill (Dunedin, FL) posting 20 assists and setter Ciara Sandoval (Fort Myers, FL) collecting 17 assists.
The Eagles will take on Presbyterian University on Friday November 18 at noon, at the University of Tampa , in the first round of South Region Tournament.
