Two FGCU Volleyball Players Named to All-America team
FORT MYERS, Fla. – Florida Gulf Coast University junior middle blocker Ericka Fonseca and sophomore libero Whitney Hendry were each named honorable mention All-America by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA). The duo becomes the first Eagles volleyball players to garner All-America honors.
Fonseca (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) was an NCAA South Region all-tournament team selection and AVCA All-Region team selection this season. She anchored the FGCU attack with 405 kills on 868 attacks while also posting a team-record 127 total blocks at the net. Fonseca finished the season ranked 26th nationally in hitting percentage (.362).
Hendry (Fort Myers, Fla.) was also an NCAA South Region all-tournament team selection and AVCA All-Region team selection this season. She led a strong Eagles team defense with 606 digs, including a single-match FGCU record 48 against Wingate. Hendry finished the season ranked ninth nationally in digs per game at 6.0.
FGCU finished the season with a 27-4 record and advanced to the third round of the NCAA Division II championship tournament, losing in the South Region finals to the University of Tampa.
The AVCA announced three teams of 12 All-Americans, while 31 other players - the remaining all-region selections - were awarded honorable-mention accolades. The selections were made by the AVCA Division II All-America committee. The awards will be presented on Wednesday, November 30 at the NCAA Division II Elite Eight Tournament banquet at Nebraska-Kearney.
