FORT MYERS, Fla. - Before a record crowd of 2638, the 10th ranked Florida Gulf Coast University volleyball team won their 25th straight match with a 3-0 (30-15, 30-21, 30-26) sweep over Barry. The Eagles conclude their regular season with a 27-2 record while Barry falls to 14-12.
"Even though we did not reach the Division II attendance record, our crowd was fantastic and was the best environment I have ever been around for a college volleyball match,' stated Director of Athletics Carl McAloose.
The Eagles did not disappoint the record crowd, jumping out to an early 5-1 lead in the opening game. Heather Van Olst led the Eagles to a game one victory with six kills. The Eagles limited the Bucs to a .077 hitting percentage and only 10 kills in the first game while hitting .424 and racking up 16 kills.
The Eagles again managed to take the upper hand early in the game with a 3-1 lead. With a 10-8 lead early in game two, FGCU went on a 9-0 run, to take a commanding 16-9 lead. The Eagles were able to maintain their lead and take game two 30-21.
Barry continued to battle the Eagles and had a 9-7 lead in the third game. The Eagles were able to outscore the Bucs 5-2 to take a 12-11 lead. From that point, FGCU was able to maintain a slim lead as the Bucs hung around in the third game. The Eagles never led by more than four points in the decisive third game, but managed a 30-26 win. Appropriately on senior night, Ericka Fonseca put down one of her match-high 19 kills to seal the win.
Lorine Durski led the Bucs with 14 kills on the night. Samara de Freitas added 11 for the visitors from Miami Shores, Fla. Lauren Evans led the defensive effort with 16 digs. The Eagle limited Barry to a .132 hitting percentage in the match.
Ericka Fonseca ended her career with 19 kills and a .680 hitting percentage while adding five blocks in the match. Heather Van Olst added 15 kills while Brooke Youngquist added 14 for the Eagles. Youngquest and Whitney Hendry each recorded 16 digs in the match.
The Eagles now await their postseason fate as they wait for the NCAA pairings to come out on Sunday.
