ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - The third longest winning streak in Division II was extended to 24 consecutive wins with a 3-0 sweep (30-23, 30-14 30-15) of Eckerd. The Florida Gulf Coast University volleyball team improved to 26-2 while Eckerd fell to 19-11.
In game one, FGCU jumped out to a 6-0 lead and never looked back. FGCU would maintain at least a six point lead throughout the game and would build a lead of as many as nine at 23-14. The Tritons made a run to cut the lead to 24-18, but that is as close as they would come in game one. FGCU would take game one 30-23.
After exchanging points early in game two, the Eagles went on a short run to take a 10-5 lead. After several of sideouts, the Eagles went on an impressive 14-0 run to take a commanding 28-12 lead. The Eagles would exchange points to coast to a 30-14 win in game two.
FGCU again jumped out to an early 5-1 lead and was able to maintain the early lead. The Eagles steadily pulled away and built a lead of 21-11. The Eagles continued to pull away before ending the match with a 30-15.
Angela White led Eckerd with 11 kills in the match while Kristy Busse led the defensive effort with 14 digs.
Ericka Fonseca led four Eagles in double figures in kills with 16. Heather Van Olst added 15 kills to go with 22 digs in the contest. Brooke Youngquist and Patricia Gomes da Silva were the other Eagles in double digits in kills with 13 and 10 respectively. Whitney Hendry added 19 digs for the Eagles. Chandra Ginest dished out 45 assists leading the Eagles to a .351 team hitting percentage.
The Eagles close the regular season on Thursday when they host Barry at Alico Arena in the regular season finale.
