Volleyball Improves to 2-0

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Florida Gulf Coast University volleyball team improved to 2-0 after a 3-0 (30-23, 30-20, 30-20) win over Central Oklahoma. FGCU trailed early in the opening game 10-7 before Heather Van Olst recorded a pair of kills in a 4-0 run to give FGCU the lead for good. With the game knotted at 16 apiece, FGCU went on an 8-2 run to take a comfortable lead. The Eagles would continue to build on a lead before winning game one 30-23. Game two saw FGCU jump to an 15-4 lead early as Brooke Youngquist recorded six kills in the run. UCO answered with an 8-0 run of their own to cut the lead to 15-12. The Eagles regained control of the second game and continued to pull away for a 30-20 game two win. In the third game, the teams exchanged points until FGCU went on a 7-1 run to take a 10-5 lead. The Eagles would build a 27-11 lead before a furious UCO rally cut the lead to 28-20. Ericka Fonseca would put the match away with her 12th kill of the afternoon. Meaghan Wedberg recorded 10 kills and added 23 assists for Central Oklahoma. Lacie Allen recorded 17 digs while Kelsey Reynolds added 13 digs for UCO. FGCU limited UCO to a .097 hitting percentage. Brooke Youngquist had a big day for the Eagles with 20 kills and 22 digs in the match. Youngquist hit .340, had a pair of aces and added two blocks for FGCU. Ericka Fonseca and Heather Van Olst recorded 12 and 11 kills respectively. Whitney Hendry led the Eagles with 23 digs in the match. FGCU will be in action again tomorrow at 9:00 am, when they face #3 Truman, then square off against #4 Concordia (Minn.) at 2:00 pm.
