Volleyball Wins Third Straight Match
FORT MYERS, Fla. – The 19th ranked Florida Gulf Coast University volleyball team won their third straight match an improved to 5-2 with a 3-0 (30-14, 30-15, 30-19) sweep of Saint Leo (5-2).
FGCU opened the match with a 5-1 run and never looked back. The Eagles continued to stretch their lead before going on a season-long 11-0 run behind the serving of Heather Van Olst. Ericka Fonseca and Brooke Youngquist each recorded a kill during the run. FGCU would coast to a 30-14 win in the first game.
Saint Leo was able to stick around in game two early. Up 11-9, FGCU then went on a 14-3 run to take a commanding lead in the second game. Youngquist recorded seven kills during the run. The Eagles would end up taking game two 30-15.
Down 2-3 in the decisive third game, the Eagles used an 8-2 run to take a 10-5 lead. The Eagles would continue to build on their lead and steadily pull away from the Lions in the third game. FGCU would pull out a 30-19 win in the third game.
Audrey Starkebaum led Saint Leo with eight kills in the match, while Emily Frey added seven kills. The Eagles held Saint Leo to 29 kills in the match while allowing the opponents to hit just .038.
Ericka Fonseca recorded a match-high 17 kills while hitting .615 in the match. Brooke Youngquist added 15 kills, hitting .444 and adding seven digs. Ashley Yance added five kills and a pair of blocks in her first action of the year. The Eagles hit .412 as a team, the second highest total in school history.
FGCU will be in action again on Friday when they face Lenoir-Rhyne at 9:00 am in the AASU Classic in Savannah, Ga.
