DAVIE, Fla. – The 18th ranked Florida Gulf Coast University won their eighth straight match to improve to 10-2 with a 3-0 sweep (30-25, 30-23, 30-20) of Nova Southeastern (6-6).
Game one was a tight affair that featured 14 ties and neither team was able to put together a run until FGCU put together four consecutive late behind the serving of Patricia Gomes da Silva. Brooke Youngquist had seven kills in the first game and added six digs. The Eagles would take game one 30-25.
In the second game, Nova Southeastern went on an early 9-1 to take a 13-8 run. Heather Van Olst led an Eagle rally recording a pair of kills in an 11-4 run that gave FGCU an 18-15 lead they would not relinquish. Van Olst finished the game with seven kills while Ericka Fonseca and Brooke Youngquist each recorded five kills in a game two 30-23 win.
Up 16-15 in the third game, FGCU went on a 5-0 run to take a commanding lead and added a pair of 4-0 runs later in the game to finish off the Sharks 30-20 in the third game. Youngquist again led the Eagles with seven kills while Whitney Hendry added nine digs in the third game.
Melinda Gorman led the Sharks with 11 kills while Karla Ortiz added 10 for the host. Both players recorded double-doubles with 15 and 14 digs respectively.
Brooke Youngquist led FGCU with 19 kills while hitting .349 in the match and adding 17 kills. Heather Van Olst added 12 kills and 14 digs for the Eagles. Chandra Ginest recorded 47 assists in the match.
FGCU will be in action again on Friday September 15, 2006 when they host Palm Beach Atlantic at 7:00 pm in Alico Arena.
