FORT MYERS, Fla. – The 18th ranked Florida Gulf Coast University volleyball team won their ninth straight match with a 3-0 (30-15, 30-23, 30-27) sweep over Palm Beach Atlantic, 5-8, to improve to 11-2 on the season.
The Eagles took control mid-way through game one with a 4-0 run behind the serving of Patricia Gomes da Salvia, the run gave FGCU a 15-8 lead. The Eagles steadily built their lead before an 8-1 run with the score 18-12, Gomes sparked the run with four kills. The Eagles would go on to take game one 30-15.
FGCU got out to an early 3-1 lead in game two and built a 12-7 lead. Palm Beach Atlantic would steadily climb back into the match and eventually knot the score at 15 all. After exchanging points, the Eagles would go on a 3-0 run to take a 22-19 lead they would continue to build on. FGCU would eventually take the second game 30-23.
With the score tied at eight all in game three, FGCU went on a 7-0 run to take a 15-8 lead. From their, Palm Beach Atlantic would steadily chip away at the Eagles lead to pull with in one point at 25-24. From there, a pair of kills by the Eagles and a pair of PBA errors allowed the Eagles to take the third game 30-27.
For the Sailfish, Ali Mitchell and Ursula Viera had big nights with 19 and 14 kills respectively. Mitchell hit .400 in the match while Viera hit .370 and added three aces. Bia Santos and Michelle Habegger added 11 and 10 digs apiece.
Ericka Fonseca led the Eagles with 15 kills on night while hitting .538. Patricia Gomes da Silva added 13 kills and hit .591 while adding three aces. Chandra Ginest dished out 51 assists, guiding the offense to a .373 hitting percentage while racking up 54 kills.
The Eagles will be back in action again on Tuesday, September 19, when they host Florida Tech at 7:00 PM in Alico Arena.
