FORT MYERS, Fla. – The 18th ranked Florida Gulf Coast University volleyball team looks to extend a nine match winning streak when they host Florida Tech September 19, 2006 on Tuesday night at Alico Arena. FGCU has won nine straight matches with eight of those coming by way of a 3-0 sweep. The Eagles are facing a 2-11 Florida Tech squad that has dropped seven straight. This will mark the fifth meeting between the two, with FGCU winning the previous four contests. FGCU took the last meeting 3-0 on October 1, 2005. This is the first of two scheduled meetings between the two schools this year. Patricia Gomes da Silva has been on a recent hot streak. In the AASU/Chatham Orthopedic Classic, against Eckerd on September 8, she equaled the school record with five service aces. On the 9th, she came back and broke the record with six aces against Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras. Over the last five matches she has 17 aces and is averaging 1.13 per game. She also is hitting .353 while averaging 3.07 kills and one block per game. Tuesday night will be “Faculty and Staff Night,” all FGCU faculty and staff will receive free admission to the game with their FGCU faculty/staff ID (tickets are regularly $5) and will have the opportunity to win prizes during the evening. Each member of the Eagle volleyball team has nominated a FGCU faculty or staff member of their choice to attend the match and walk out with them during player introductions. Also, someone will have the opportunity to become an assistant coach for the night and will sit with the team on the bench. The Eagles wrap up their homestand next Tuesday when they host Rollins at 7:00 pm in Alico Arena.
