Volleyball Looks for 11th Straight Win
FORT MYERS, Fla. – The 16th ranked Florida Gulf Coast University volleyball team, currently on a 10-match winning streak, host Rollins on September 26, 2006 at 7:00 PM in Alico Arena.
FGCU has won 10 straight matches, nine consecutive coming by way of a 3-0 sweep. This is the second meeting this season between Rollins and FGCU. The Eagles traveled up to Winter Park, Fla., on September 3, and handed Rollins their first loss of the season. The Tars are now 11-3 on the season. Rollins is led by Stephanie Nichols, who was named the Sports Imports/AVCA player of the week last week. For the year, Nichols is averaging 3.91 kills and 2.09 digs per game.
During the Eagles 10-match winning streak, FGCU is hitting .299 as a team while limiting opponents to a .091 hitting percentage. The Eagles are averaging over six more kills per game than their opponents. Brooke Youngquist leads the onslaught, averaging 4.00 kills and 4.10 digs per game. She is one of three Eagles to average more than three kills per game. Ericka Fonseca is averaging 3.94 kills per game while Patricia Gomes da Silva is averaging 3.19.
Tuesday is also Sun Coast Athletic League and Big Brothers Big Sisters Night. Sun Coast Athletic League students are invited to join us watch the 16th ranked FGCU volleyball team. All Big Brother and Big Sister’s children in attendance will receive free admission and special recognition.
The Eagles will go on the road for a preview of life in the Atlantic Sun with a pair of matches against future conference rivals. The Eagles will take on Jacksonville on Friday September 29 and conclude their road trip with a match at pre-season co-favorite North Florida on Saturday September 30.
