FGCU Volleyball Announces 2006 Schedule
FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Florida Gulf Coast University volleyball team has released its 2006 schedule, head coach Jaye Flood announced today. The Eagles will play a total of 21 regular season matches, including three tournaments in August, September and October.
Coming off a 27-4 season in the second year of the program and a trip to the NCAA Championship tournament for the second year in a row, FGCU will play five matches against NCAA Division II Championship participants from 2005.
The Eagles open the 2006 campaign on August 24 with a home game versus Northern Kentucky University. They will close out the regular season with a home match versus regional opponent Barry University.
FGCU will host nine home matches, including NCAA tournament teams 2004 national champions Barry University and Rollins College.
“We tried to schedule teams that will make us better and help us take the next step for our program as we heading into Division I in 2007,” FGCU coach Jaye Flood said. “Our region schedule is challenging so we tried to play in strong, out-of-region tournaments that will provide us with valuable experience and we wanted to add the top two Atlantic Sun teams Jacksonville and North Florida to begin our Division I transition.”
In 2006, the Eagles return four starters and libero from the 2005 season, which finished 27-4 and advanced to the NCAA Championship tournament and the South Region finals. The Eagles made their first ever top 25 national ranking and past the 24-6 inaugural season in wins.
