FORT MYERS, Fla., - New FGCU Head Volleyball Coach Dave Nichols has announced the 2008 volleyball schedule. The Eagles will play 11 home contests, all 10 Atlantic Sun foes plus Florida International will travel to Alico Arena where FGCU has a 25-match winning streak.
“I am excited about the teams that we play this year,” said Nichols. “We have several challenging matches against teams that are on the cusp of the top 25. I am looking forward to working with the team to prepare them for this season.”
The Eagles open the season at the Hilton/NCCU Volleyball Tournament. They will face a couple of familiar foes in UNC-Asheville and Elon. The Eagles knocked off both opponents in tournaments last season en route to a 23-3 record. Also, the Eagles will face Maine in the tournament in Durham, N.C. Following that tournament, the Eagles travel to Las Cruces, N.M., for the New Mexico State tournament where they will face New Mexico State, Houston and Utah. The host Aggies were 26-6 last season and advanced to the NCAA Tournament.
Following the two tournaments, the Eagles will make their 2008 debut in Alico Arena, where they are 33-1 all-time, when they open up with A-Sun rival Stetson on September 9. The Eagles will also face Campbell while they are at home. This season, the Eagles will play each team in the A-Sun at home and on the road. The Eagles have a season long four-game home-stand beginning on October 10 where three of the top four seeds in the conference tournament from a year ago visit Fort Myers. The home-stand begins with Jacksonville and finish up with Lipscomb, the only team in the conference to hand FGCU a loss last year. The Eagles wrap up the home schedule on November 11, with Florida International, who was one of the other two teams to hand the Eagles a loss during the 2007 season.
FGCU returns four starters from the 2007 league champions including Atlantic Sun Conference Player of the Year Ana Kokanovic as well as 1st Team All-Atlantic Sun selection Roberta Santos.
