Fort Myers, Fla. – The Atlantic Sun released the 2007 preseason volleyball poll today. FGCU, in its first year in the A-Sun, was fourth in the coaches poll. The Eagles received 111 votes including three first place votes, finishing only one point behind Jacksonville.
Belmont senior setter Colleen Nilson (McHenry, Ill.), the 2006 Atlantic Sun Player of the Year, was chosen for that same honor in the 2007 preseason voting, by the coaches, on Wednesday. Her Bruins were picked to win the regular-season title and to defend its A-Sun Tournament crown. Belmont received 132 votes and six first place votes. ETSU received 117 votes and one first place vote, totaled only six more points than the fourth place Eagles. Jacksonville, who FGCU defeated 3-0 last season, was third with 112 points. UNF, fifth in the poll, also was an FGCU opponent last season, with the Eagles winning 3-1.
The league also announced the preseason All-Conference team as well. Nilson was joined by Belmont teammate Jaye Schuler. ETSU placed Kaena Apana and Callie Kiselich on the team while Campbell’s Femi Alabi, Lipscomb’s Ann Mullins and UNF’s Amy Stroder were the other members of the team.
FGCU opens the season August 24, at the Florida State Invitational with TCU. FGCU will play its first Atlantic Sun Conference match at Alico Arena on September 21 against Gardner-Webb at 7:00 pm.
