Tallahassee, Fla., - After suffering a tough loss in their first Division I match, the Eagles rebounded to crush UNC-Asheville 3-0. FGCU outhit the Bulldogs .311 to .021 in the 3-0 sweep. The Eagles racked up 48 kills to just 18 for the Bulldogs.
FGCU jumped out to an early lead and never looked back in a 30-9 thrashing of the Bulldogs. Any thoughts of last night’s match were quickly erased as the Eagles ran to a 12-1 lead. The Bulldogs never got within 10 points in game one.
In the second game, with the score 14-12, FGCU, the Eagles went on a 6-0 run to take a 20-12 lead and cruise to a 30-21 win. Cara Ziegler (Fort Myers, Fla.) recorded five kills in the game to help lift the Eagles. FGCU ended the match with a decisive 30-12 win.
The Eagles jumped to a 13-2 win in the third game behind seven straight points off the serve of Brooke Youngquist (Fort Myers, Fla.). The Eagles continued to build up their lead and had a 29-9 lead as Asheville fought off four match points before falling 30-12.
Lauren Ficker and Alysha Greer recorded five kills apiece while Shennen Bagge added 11 digs.
Patricia Silva (Sao Palo, Brazil) led the Eagles with 12 kills while hitting .440. Roberta Santos (Recife, Brazil) had another great match, hitting .615 with eight kills, 33 assists, 14 digs and four aces. Youngquist added nine kills and 19 digs while Whitney Hendry (Fort Myers, Fla.) chipped in 16 digs.
FGCU will be back in action next Friday when they face St. Francis in Northern Colorado’s Tournament.
