Fort Myers, Fla. – The FGCU Volleyball team is back in action tomorrow at 6:30 pm in the Northern Colorado Hampton Inn & Suites Classic. The Eagles face St. Francis on Friday and UC-Riverside and the hosts Bears on Saturday.
The Eagles pounded UNC-Asheville for FGCU’s first win as a Division I member. In their first tournament as a Division I member, the Eagles placed Roberta Santos (Recife, Brazil) and Brooke Youngquist (Fort Myers, Fla.) on the all-tournament team. Youngquist recorded 30 kills in the two matches while Santos hit .306 for the weekend, averaged 10.5 assists per game and recorded six aces.
The Eagles open with St. Francis, located in Loretta, Pa. The Red Flash finished 19-14 last season and had a 7-1 mark in the Northeastern Conference. The team returns eight letterwinners and four starters. The Red Flash were not in action last weekend and kick off the season on Friday morning.
Saturday morning’s opponent, UC Riverside is located in Riverside, California, the Bears posted a 2-25 record in 2006 with a 0-14 mark in the Big West Conference. They return 12 letterwinners and four starters. Riverside also opens the season on Friday.
The Eagles conclude the tournament with hosts Northern Colorado. The Bears come into the weekend with an 0-3 record after falling to Portland, South Dakota State and Washington State in the Baden Cougar Challenge in Pullman, Washington last weekend. Dulcie Stone and Kenzie Shreeve lead the Bears with 50 and 43 kills respectively.
The Eagles return home on Friday when they host North Carolina Central at 7:00 pm in Alico Arena in the FGCU Supervolley Tournament.
