Brooke Youngquist led the Eagles with 14 kills against NCCU
Fort Myers, Fla. – The Florida Gulf Coast University volleyball team won their fifth straight match with a 3-0 (30-17, 30-24, 30-17) sweep of North Carolina Central on Friday night in the FGCU Supervolley Tournament.
The Eagles dominated the match, hitting .377 while racking up 51 kills and limiting NCCU to a .150 percentage and 33 kills.
The Eagles raced to an 8-1 lead in game one and never looked back. Four Eagles recorded at least four kills in the game, while as a team, FGCU pounded home 19 kills and hit .655, committing no errors in the first game.
The second game was a much closer affair, neither team had a lead of three points until FGCU began to pull away late. With the score knotted up at 24 all, FGCU went on a 6-0 run to close game two. Patricia Silva (Sao Palo, Brazil) ended the game with a pair of kills.
Game there saw FGCU again take a big lead they would not relinquish. FGCU got out of the gates with a 6-1 lead and continued to build a lead of 25-10. NCCU began to claw away at the lead, but it was too little too late as FGCU wrapped up the match with a 30-17 win.
Last year’s Division II Player-of-the-Year Shari Matthews had 13 kills and 11 digs for the visitors. Anielle Da Silva added eight kills in the match.
Roberta Santos (Recife, Brazil) continued the stellar start to her FGCU career with eight kills, 28 assists and 13 blocks. Brooke Youngquist (Fort Myers, Fla.) led all players with 14 kills while hitting .520 and adding 10 digs. Silva drove home 12 kills and hit .435 in the match.
Earlier in the day, NCCU knocked off Bethune-Cookman in four games. The two will play tomorrow morning at 11:00 am while FGCU will take on Bethune-Cookman at 4:00 pm to wrap up the tournament.
