Volleyball Sweeps Stetson for 13th Straight Win

DELAND, Fla., - The FGCU volleyball team streaked to their 13th straight win with a 3-0 (30-20, 30-27, 30-21) sweep A-Sun rival Stetson. With the win, the Eagles are now 13-1, 3-0 A-Sun, while Stetson falls to 7-9, 2-1 with their first conference loss of the season.

The Eagles began the match with a 3-0 run behind a pair of kills and a Stetson error. Stetson was able to even the score at five and the game would stay close until a 4-0 FGCU run gave the Eagles a 14-10 lead. From that point, FGCU steadily pulled away for the 30-20 win in the first game. Cara Ziegler (Fort Myers, Fla.) hit an amazing .778 with seven kills in the first game while Ana Kokanovic (Lazaravac, Serbia) added six kills while hitting .545.

Game two saw Stetson take an early 5-2 lead before FGCU was able to outscore the Hatters 5-2 to even the score at seven. The Hatters were hen able to take a 19-13 lead, threatening to end FGCU’s consecutive games won streak at 26. The Eagles rallied to even the score at 23 all with Kokanovic serving. The junior served a couple of aces, giving the Eagles a slim 25-23 lead. From that point, the teams exchanged points before the Eagles finished off Stetson for a 30-27 game two win.

The Eagles again jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the third game, but this time pulled away and never trailed. The Hatters were able to stay within striking distance until the Eagles ended the match with a 7-0 run for a 30-21 win in the final game.

Gina Iacona led the Haters with 11 kills while Beth Slabaugh and Rebecca Orzechowicz added 10 apiece.

Brooke Youngquist (Fort Myers, Fla.) led the Eagles with 15 kills and added 10 digs. Kokanovic chipped in 14 to go with 15 digs and four aces. Ziegler recorded 11 kills as well. Whitney Hendry (Fort Myers, Fla.) added a match-high 22 digs. FGCU hit .301 in the match while holding the Hatters to a .175 percentage.

The Eagles will be in action again next Friday when they travel to Nashville, Tenn., to face league favorite and fellow A-Sun unbeaten Belmont (3-0 A-Sun). That game can be seen live on Asun.tv.
