Volleyball's 14-Match Winning Streak Snapped by Lipscomb

NASHVILLE, Tenn., - The FGCU women’s volleyball team saw its 14 match winning snapped on Sunday afternoon after suffering a 3-2 loss to Lipscomb. The Eagles slip to 14-2, 4-1 A-Sun, while Lipscomb improves to 9-9, 3-2 A-Sun.

The Eagles got off to a 1-0 lead, hitting .319 in game one, recording 18 kills in a 30-26 win. The Lady Bisons were able to hold the A-Sun’s top offense to a .195 hitting percentage over the next two games to take a 2-1 lead.

Faced with their first loss in over a month, the Eagles fought off five straight match points after falling behind 29-24 in the fourth game. Ana Kokanovic (Lazarevac, Serbia) began the rally with a kill. She followed with an ace. Cara Ziegler (Fort Myers, Fla.) recorded a pair of kills and teamed with Roberta Santos on a pair of blocks to give the Eagles a 30-29 lead. Brooke Youngquist ended the game with a kill, giving FGCU a 31-29 win to force game five.

The Eagles got off to a 3-1 lead in the fifth game and was able to maintain the lead, going up 11-8 and forcing a timeout by the Lady Bisons. A 3-0 run by Lipscomb evened the score and the teams exchanged points making the score 13-12 FGCU. A kill by Lipscomb’s Alex Kelly evened the score again and a block by Alex Scruggs and Sarah Snider gave the Bisons a sixth match point. This time, FGCU was unable to hold off Lipscomb as Alex Scruggs recorded 14th kill and secured the 15-13 win in the deciding fifth game.

Sarah Snider led the Bisons with 26 kills and added 20 digs. Jessica Enderle added 21 kills for Lipscomb. The Bisions out-hit FGCU .246 to .193, only the second time this season that FGCU has been out-hit.

Brooke Youngquist led the Eagles with 22 kills and added 17 digs. Ana Kokanovic added 18 kills to go with 25 digs. Whitney Hendry (Fort Myers, Fla.) led all players with 26 digs in the match. Roberta Santos chipped in eight kills, 33 assists, 23 digs and six blocks.

The Eagles will look to rebound from their first A-Sun loss next Friday when they host USC-Upstate at 7:00 pm.
