Ft. Myers, Fla.,- The FGCU Eagles volleyball team got back on track with a 3-0 (30-17, 30-19, 30-13) win over USC Upstate. The Eagles move to a 15-2 overall record and 5-1 in the A-Sun Conference while USC Upstate falls to 6-13 overall and 0-6 in the conference.
As game one began, the Eagles jumped on the Spartans early and raced to a 22-8 lead. Ana Kokanovic served up three aces to help the Eagles grab the early lead. FGCU was able to hang on for a 30-17 win in the game and posted a .483 hitting percentage.
FGCU fell behind early in the second game, but grabbed a 6-5 lead and began to steadily pull away. The Eagles would use six kills from Kokanovic to pull away and take game two 30-19. The Eagles outhit the Spartans .324 to .057 in the second game.
FGCU again got off to an early lead, a 13-5 advantage in the beginning stages of the third game. FGCU used a 7-0 run to take a 22-9 lead. A pair of aces by Kokanovic and kills by Brooke Youngquist and Patricia Silva helped the Eagles get the huge lead. The Eagles would pull out a 30-13 win in the final game.
Sandra Campbell, Katie Downey and Jessicah Ambrisco each chipped in six kills for the Spartans.
Ana Kokanovic led all players with 16 kills and six aces while hitting .520 in the match. Youngquist added nine kills and 13 digs in the match.
The FGCU volleyball team will be in action again Saturday night at Alico Arena when they host ETSU in the Atlantic Sun match of the week.
