MACON, Ga., - The FGCU volleyball team rolled to their 21st win of the season and 9th A-Sun win with a 3-0 (31-29, 30-17, 30-20) win at Mercer. The Eagles improve to 21-2 overall and 9-1 in the A-Sun while Mercer falls to 8-16, 6-3. The Eagles clinched a share of the regular-season volleyball championship and can win the title outright next weekend with a win at Jacksonville.
Mercer scored the first five points and maintained a lead until four straight FGCU points evened the score at 14 all. Mercer regained a 22-20 lead until four straight FGCU points gave the Eagles a slight advantage. The Bears continued to claw their way back, taking a 29-28 lead in the first game. Three straight FGCU points gave the Eagles a 31-29 win in game one.
FGCU opened up a 19-9 lead in game two and would weather a 4-1 run by the Bears to cruise to a 30-18 win in the second game. FGCU hit .379 in the game, committing only four errors in game two and limited the Bears to 11 kills and a .156 percentage.
The third game remained close until a huge FGCU run broke a 15 all tie. The Eagles went on an 11-2 run to take a commanding 26-17 lead and finished the three-game sweep with a 30-20 win in the final game.
Jen Darty led the Bears with 12 kills while hitting .524 in the match. Claire Tucker picked up a match-high 18 digs for the Bears as well.
Roberta Santos led the Eagles with 14 kills while hitting .414 with 19 assists, six digs and three blocks. Brooke Youngquist and Audrey Campbell added 10 kills each. Campbell hit an amazing .769 on 13 attempts while Youngquist added 14 digs in the match.
The Eagles will be in action next weekend when they travel to Jacksonville, Fla., to face North Florida on Friday night before the final A-Sun match which will determine the league champion.
