FORT MYERS, Fla., - The FGCU volleyball team dropped its first two matches of the season, falling 3-1 (22-22, 25-21, 25-12, 25-17) to Maine. FGCU then fell in five games to UNC Asheville 3-2 (25-23, 21-25, 22-25, 25-22, 15-8).
“Holly Youngquist had a great first day for a freshman,” said Head Coach Dave Nichols. “It is still very early in the season, but we have seen some things that need improvement, but we will be a much different team tomorrow with Roberta Santos back in the lineup.”
The Eagles were able put down 12 kills in game one and held the lead for much of the first game before finishing with a kill from Catilin Shawver. The Black Bears offense then took over, picking up 43 kills to just nine hitting errors over the next three games to pick up the win.
In the second match of the day, the Eagles were 2-1 and had a 22-18 lead, but seven straight points by UNC Asheville sent the match to a fifth game. The Bulldogs cruised in the fifth to a 15-8 win for the 3-2 win.
The Eagles will be in action again tomorrow at 1:00 pm against Elon. The match time has been moved to 1:00 pm from the originally scheduled 11:00 am.
