LAS CRUCES, N.M., - The FGCU volleyball team fell to 1-3 after a 3-0 (25-21, 25-12, 25-18) loss to New Mexico State. The Aggies (AVCA Preseason #23) improve to 3-2 with the win.
“New Mexico State is a great program and this was a good test to see where we stand against one of the best programs,” stated Head Coach Dave Nichols. “We will take a lot of positives out of this match and learned a lot tonight. Roberta Santos had a fantastic match and Holly Youngquist continues to impress me. For a freshman to come in and make some of the plays she has made this early in the season is a good sign for us.”
The Aggies led 13-11 midway through game one and used a 9-3 run to take a 22-14 lead. A 5-0 run by the Eagles behind the serving of Catilin Shawver. The Eagles were able to score four of the next six points, however NMSU held on for a 25-21 win.
After the Eagles scored first in game two, the Aggies went on an 8-1 run to take a commanding 8-2 lead. A 3-0 FGCU run cut the lead to 8-5. From that point, NMSU built a lead of 15 points before winning 25-12. The Aggies hit .450 in the game and limited FGCU to six kills.
In game three with NMSU leading 11-10, the Aggies went on a 6-2 run to take a 17-12 lead and extend the lead to 22-13. New Mexico State would go on to win 25-18 to clinch the match.
Lindsey Yon led NMSU with 17 kills and hit .467 on the match. Amber Simpson picked up five kills and five blocks for the Aggies as well.
Roberta Santos had a great all around match with eight kills (.467 percentage), 21 assists, five digs and five blocks. Ana Kokanovic led the Eagles with nine kills while Cheyenne Jenks added five kills and a team high seven digs. Holly Youngquist matched Jenks with seven digs in the match.
The Eagles will face Houston tomorrow at 1:00 pm in their second match of the NMSU Tournament.
