FORT MYERS, Fla., - The FGCU volleyball team makes its home debut tomorrow night in a match that doubles as the Atlantic Sun opener as well. The Eagles come in with a 1-5 record and take on Stetson who has an identical record.
FGCU welcomes the return to Alico Arena where they have won 25 consecutive matches and own a 33-1 all-time record in the facility. The Eagles were handed their only loss in Alico Arena in 2004 to Barry, who was coached by current FGCU Head Coach Dave Nichols. In individual games, FGCU is 97-9 all-time in Alico. No current player has ever lost at Alico Arena. The Hatters bring in an identical 1-5 record to the match.
The Hatters are coming off of a 1-2 weekend at the 2008 Holiday Inn Stetson Invitational. The Hatters were selected to finish eighth in the Atlantic Sun this season after finishing 11-15 overall and 4-7 in the league.
FGCU will kick off the 2008 home season with “Luau Night," a Hawaiian style Pig Roast Tailgate from Popz BBQ before game. Free food will be provided for students with ID while it lasts. This will kick-off our season long 'Hawaiian' theme for FGCU Volleyball. Coach Nichols will be wearing his Hawaiian shirt all season long. This will also mark the first FGCU broadcast of the year on A-Sun.TV.
The Eagles and Hatters have met only once before with FGCU winning 3-0 (30-20, 30-27, 30-21) in DeLand. Ana Kokanovic hit .364 with 14 kills, 15 digs and four aces in the match. The Eagles hit .301 and served up 10 aces in the match.
The Eagles will be back in action again on Saturday when they host A-Sun rival Campbell at 3:00 pm in Alico Arena.
