FORT MYERS, Fla., - The FGCU volleyball team kicked off their 2008 home campaign with a 3-0 (25-18, 25-21, 25-18) sweep of Atlantic Sun rival Stetson. The Eagles improve to 2-5 overall and 1-0 in the league while Stetson falls to 1-6 and 0-1. FGCU has now won 26 straight in Alico Arena.
“We did some positive things tonight, but were not very consistent in our serve and receive,” said Head Coach Dave Nichols. “We had some moments where we were not very focused, but overall, I thought our performance was good and I like the direction that the team is going.”
The Eagles hit .350 as a team and served up 10 aces in the match. Ana Kokanovic led the Eagles with 13 kills and a .393 percentage while Audrey Campbell added 10 kills and a .667 percentage. Roberta Santos picked up nine kills, 38 assists and four aces in the match.
The Eagles jumped to a 10-4 lead in game one. Kokanovic picked up four kills during that run. The Eagles maintained a lead of at least four in game one and built their advantage to 23-12. FGCU would hold on for a 25-18 win in game one.
In the second game, the Eagles again built a large lead at 7-2. The Hatters were able to cut FGCU’s lead to 19-18 before the Eagles regained momentum by forcing a pair of hitting errors and picking up kills from Cheyenne Jenks and Audrey Campbell. The Eagles would hold on for a 25-21 win in the second game.
Stetson jumped out to an early 2-0 lead before a 6-1 FGCU run put the Eagles up 6-3. The Eagles upped the advantage to 19-9 and a 5-0 run by the Hatters trimmed the margin to 19-14. FGCU then coasted to a 25-18 win in game three.
The Hatters hit .203 and picked up 23 kills in the match and 28 digs. Rebecca Orzechowicz had a team-high six kills for the guests.
The Eagles will be back in action again on Saturday when they face league Rival Campbell at 3:00 pm in Alico Arena.
