MACON, Ga., - The FGCU Eagles extended their winning streak over Atlantic Sun foes to 11 straight with a 3-1 (28-26, 23-25, 25-18, 25-23) win at Mercer. FGCU improves to 4-5 overall and 3-0 in the league while Mercer slips to 5-6 overall and 1-3 in the league.
Ana Kokanovic picked up a career-high 27 kills in the match and added 14 digs to go with five aces. Catilin Shawver added 10 kills and 11 digs for the Eagles. Roberta Santos picked up a season-high 47 assists to go with 15 digs, seven kills, four aces and a pair of blocks. Holly Youngquist added a career-high 25 digs for the Eagles.
Libby Hansch and Karen Dorris each put away 11 kills for the hosts and Claire Tucker paced the team with 22 digs.
The Eagles got off to an early 5-1 and extended the lead to 12-5 early in the first game. FGCU would maintain a lead of at least five points, earning a 22-12 lead before Mercer rallied. Mercer cut into the FGCU lead and a 6-0 run towards the end of game one left the Eagles with a 24-22 lead. The Bears were able to extend the game before FGCU eventually pulled out a 28-26 win.
Mercer ended a 23 consecutive set winning streak with a 25-23 win over the Eagles in the second set. The Bears hit .209 in the game while holding the Eagles to a .021 percentage.
FGCU rebounded with a decisive 25-18 win to take a 2-1 advantage. The Eagles hit .311 while pounding home 19 kills in the third set. FGCU would clinch the match with a 25-23 win in game four.
The Eagles served up a season-high 11 aces, the third consecutive match that the team has topped double figures.
FGCU will face Kennesaw State tomorrow at 3:30 pm in Kennesaw, Ga. KSU improved to 2-9 overall and 1-3 in the A-Sun with a 3-2 win over Stetson tonight.
