Volleyball Downs Lipscomb in A-Sun Match of the Week

NASHVILLE, Tenn., - FGCU and Lipscomb did not disappoint in the Atlantic Sun match of the week. The Eagles regained a share of first place with an epic 3-2 (25-23, 14-25, 25-22, 22-25, 15-13) win in Nashville over the previously unbeaten Lady Bisons. FGCU improved to 8-6 overall and 7-1 in the A-Sun while Lipscomb falls 9-7 and 7-1.

The first set was close early on as neither team took a lead larger than two points until the Eagles took an 18-15 lead. FGCU scored four straight to take the lead, getting a kill and an ace by Catilin Shawver. The Lady Bisons answered with four straight points of their own to go up 19-18. A service error then kills by Audrey Campbell and Ana Kokanovic forced a Lipscomb timeout at 21-19 in favor of the Eagles. Coming out of the timeout, Lipscomb went on a 3-1 run to force an FGCU timeout with the score knotted at 22 all. FGCU picked up kills from Campbell and Kokanovic to lift them to a 25-23 win in the first set.

Seven FGCU errors early in the second set led to a 10-2 Lipscomb lead, and forced The Eagles to use both timeouts early on. The Eagles began to slowly claw their way back behind three kills by Ashley Yance to cut the lead to 15-10. A 4-0 Lipscomb run, aided by a pair of FGCU attack errors put the Lady Bisons up 19-10. They would go on to win the second set 25-14 as the Eagles committed 12 errors in the set.

The Eagles took a 2-1 lead with a 25-22 win in the third set. After falling behind 2-1 early and seeing seven ties early on, the Eagles were able to take an 11-8 lead. The Bisons were able to even the score on two more occasions, but never regain the lead. FGCU was able to go on a 4-1 run to close the set. The Lady Bisons took an early 9-2 lead before the Eagles rallied. A 9-5 run by FGCU trimmed Lipscomb’s lead to 14-11. The Eagles were able to go on a late 4-0 run to cut the lead to 23-22, but consecutive points by the hosts forced the match to a deciding set.

Both teams were tight early in the deciding set as three of the first four points were scored off service errors. After the shaky start, the Eagles went on a 5-0 run to take a 9-5 lead, forcing a timeout by the Lady Bisons. Lipscomb came out on a 6-2 run out of the break, but a service error ended the surge and the Eagles took a 14-11 lead. The Lady Bisons were able to hold off two set points, but Ana Kokanovic ended the match with her 11th kill.

Alex Kelly led Lipscomb with a match-high 17 kills. Katie Rose and Erin Pierce each added 10 kills apiece. Stefine Pease dished out 48 assists and Jessica Turner recorded 28 digs in the match. As a team, the Bisons hit had 58 kills on a .191 percentage and added seven aces and 79 digs in the match.

Ana Kokanovic and Ashley Yance led four Eagles in double figures in kills with 11 each. Yance hit .688 in the match while Kokanovic added 14 digs. Audrey Campbell and Roberta Santos each added 10 kills for FGCU. Santos just missed a triple double with 39 assists and eight kills. She added six blocks for the Eagles. Holly Youngquist led the team with 24 digs in the match.

The Eagles return home next Friday to kick off a four-match home stand with Jacksonville next Friday night at 7:00 pm in Alico Arena.
