Volleyball Wins 7th Straight Match

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn., - The FGCU volleyball team extended its season long winning streak to seven matches with a 3-0 (25-15, 25-21, 25-21) sweep of ETSU. With the win, the Eagles improve to 14-6 overall and 12-1 in the Atlantic Sun while The Bucs fall to 7-14 and 4-9.

After the Bucs scored first, the Eagles went on a 4-0 run and never looked back in the first set. FGCU steadily pulled away for an easy 10 point win. FGCU served up three aces and hit .455 while picking up 17 kills.

FGCU labored to a 25-21 win in the second set as the teams combined for 19 unforced errors in the set. Down 18-13, the Bucs got three consecutive kills to help a 6-1 run that evened the set. A couple of hitting errors on the Bucs and a pair of kills from Ana Kokanovic gave the Eagles the momentum and FGCU held on for a 25-21 win.

The third set featured six ties until a 4-0 Eagle run gave the Eagles the lead for good. The Bucs would cut the lead to three, but could get no closer and FGCU wound up with a 25-21 win in the final set. Roberta Santos served up an ace in what would prove to be the decisive run while Kokanovic and Ashley Yance added kills in the run.

FGCU held the Bucs to a .191 hitting percentage, the eighth time in the last 11 matches the Eagles have held an opponent to under .200. Erin Ryan posted a team high 10 kills and hit .692 in the match. Whitney Cogburn and Lauren Baufield added eight and seven kills respectively.

Ana Kokanovic led all players with a match high 16 kills while hitting .440 in the match. Roberta Santos added eight kills while dishing out 26 assists and seven digs with a .412 percentage. The Eagles hit .294 in the match, the sixth straight time that FGCU has hit over .290.

FGCU will be back in action tomorrow when they travel to Spartanburg, S.C., to face USC Upstate.
