BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The FGCU Volleyball team won its 12th straight match to clinch a share of their second consecutive Atlantic Sun championship with a 3-0 (25-14, 25-14, 25-15) sweep of Campbell. The Eagles improve to 19-6 overall and 17-1 in the A-Sun while Campbell falls to 6-20 and 4-13.
The Eagles need to win one match next weekend at North Florida or Jacksonville to win their second straight Atlantic Sun conference championship.
With the score tied at five all, the Eagles went on an 8-1 run that saw four different Eagles pick up kills. Already up 19-13, the Eagles went on a 6-1 run t hat saw an ace by Roberta Santos and a pair of blocks from Ana Kokanovic. The 6-1 run ended the first set at 25-14.
FGCU began the second set on a 5-0 run with a pair of aces from Cheyenne Jenks. With an 8-5 lead, Santos served off six consecutive points to give FGCU a commanding lead. The Eagles hit .385 in the game and served up four aces for a second straight 25-14 win.
Ana Kokanovic dominated the third set, pounding out 10 kills on 11 swings as the Eagles hit .400 with 17 kills in the set. They used an early 5-0 run to take a 9-4 lead and ran off eight straight behind Catilin Shawver to go up 21-8. The Eagles fittingly ended the match on Kokanovic’s match-high 18 kills.
Campbell was led by Katie Stallings who picked up 10 kills on 20 attempts. Elisabeth Ennis added 13 digs for the Camels.
Kokanovic was dominant with 18 kills and a .577 percentage. Roberta Santos dished out 31 assists while adding 10 digs and three kills. Holly Youngquist also picked up 17 digs.
The Eagles can pick up their 20th win when they put their 35-home match winning streak on the line against Florida International on Tuesday. It will also mark the last home match for seniors Roberta Santos, Ana Kokanovic, Audrey Campbell and Kelly O’Connor.
